Developed in the early 1950s in the United Kingdom, Plastigauge® is a patented plastic strip that compresses predictably under load, allowing precise measurement of bearing clearances and assembly fits without disassembly or expensive instruments. When placed between a bearing shell and journal, the strip width after assembly corresponds to the actual clearance on a simple comparison gauge.
Plastigauge is available in a range of measurement grades (PLA, PLB, PLC, PLD, PLE, PLF, PLX) covering clearances from 0.025 mm to 0.900 mm. It is used globally in diesel and gas engine overhaul, industrial pump and compressor maintenance, turbine bearing checks, and precision machinery assembly wherever direct clearance measurement is needed.
